Stop Buying New Moms Useless Crap

Everyone always gets the baby something when a woman has her first child but Mom is usually left out of the gift giving process. She gets plenty of adorable (and totally impractical) baby outfits and some completely irritating (but slightly more practical) sleepers with snaps. Seriously, stay away from snaps. I remember being woken for night feedings and diaper changes and barely getting the sleeper snapped back up before the kid woke up for another feeding! But I digress. Moms need love too, and not just any kind of love, they need practical love. This is why I’ve decided to share my list of totally practical products that will help new moms as they’re trying to get a handle on keeping a baby alive while simultaneously attempting to look after themselves.

Practical Product#1- Bar soap that smells nice and is moisturising

If you have to shower while baby is screaming in the bouncy chair you need to get in and out as fast as possible. Rinsing body wash out of those poofy things takes for-ev-er (plus they are basically bacteria factories-YUCK). Bar soap is quick and easy. I personally like Oil of Olay, whatever version is on sale.

Practical Product#2- Nice smelling 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner

We’re not trying to have the most beautiful hair here, we’re just trying to get clean and wash out any vomit that the baby was kind enough to leave on our shoulder or in our hair. That said, Herbal Essences has several nice smelling 2 in 1โ€™s that I enjoyed when I had young babies around that leave your hair clean and beautiful. Win win!

Practical Prodcut#3- Schick Intuition razor with lots of blade refills

This thing is amazing. If you like to shave your underarms or legs this thing lets you do it in virtually no time without risk of nicks and cuts. I still use this even though my kids are older because it is the best razor Iโ€™ve ever tried.

Practical Product#4- Cleansing facial wipes

Because at the end of a long and exhausting day taking even two minutes to wash your face feels like too long. Neutrogena Night Calming Wipes are gentle, cleanse well, and have a lovely calming scent. The Kirkland brand of face cleansing wipes from Costco are a good 2nd choice, with a slightly better price point.

Practical Product#5- Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Leave On Mask

Since my 1st pregnancy I have struggled with acne on my face and the only the thing I found that helped was a prescription lotion, until I found this leave on mask from Neutrogena. I put it on every night after I wash with a cleansing wipe and it really helps. Seriously. Get it.

And thatโ€™s it. Just a few little things that will help the new mom in your life to feel a little more like her old self while she learns to care for the tiny human who recently destroyed her body. Put them in a gift box and bring her some coffee. She needs it.

Until next time,

Hi, I'm Chantal. I'm a mediocre stay at home mom to two hilarious, and frequently frustrating, small humans and an even more mediocre wife to an equally hilarious, but slightly less frustrating, grown up man. I like writing, powerlifting, eating, long afternoon naps, and laughing at my own jokes.

    1. I totally forgot about body lotion! When I had my first I used a spray on one that worked pretty well but it didn’t smell as nice as I would have liked ๐Ÿ˜€

  1. I think people get so caught up in trying to be cutesy that they forget about the much needed and always appreciated practical gifts! I always try to put together a little package of more practical products with some ‘self-care’ items too – like warm fuzzy socks recently for a friend that gave birth in the cold of winter so she could keep her feet warm while running around to care for baby on the cold floors at night lol

    1. Yes exactly! I just want to do whatever I can to make that momma’s life easier when she’s running on nothing but caffeine and promises that it will get better ๐Ÿ˜€
